Testing lighting strategies within a multi-layer cultivation system

Early trials at Swift CEA are examining how fixture placement, intensity and light distribution relate to crop uniformity and plant performance within a multi-layer cultivation system.

Because much of our lighting hardware is designed and built in-house, the physical configuration and control strategy can be adapted as the research question develops.

Using shiso as a test crop for multivariable cultivation optimisation

Shiso (Perilla frutescens) is a specialty crop originating in East Asia and is not a conventional Dutch crop. We are using it as an ongoing test case for the value of controlled cultivation outside a crop's traditional production context.

The trial is framed as a multivariable optimisation problem: balancing time to harvest, biomass yield and marketable crop quality under controllable lighting and environmental conditions, while keeping energy and resource use explicit.
